The Interstate around Hydro is dangerous
Sadly, there are 2 less people on this planet because two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. I am not sure why this area and the area west of Elk City prompt so many people to run into each other, but it happens. So east of Hydro is getting a wreck at least once a week, it would appear. So wear your seatbelt and slow down you are not in so big of a hurry that you risk never making it to your destination.

Oklahoma wants more teachers
Southwestern Oklahoma State University just awarded $500,000 in Phase II funding through TeachForwardOK to keep building out its Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway. This is in direct support for real people finishing real degrees.
SWOSU built this pathway for people already working in our schools, already showing up every day, who just don’t have a bachelor’s degree yet. Once they’ve hammered out 60 college credit hours, they can step into the apprenticeship, keep their paycheck, keep serving their district, and finish their coursework through SWOSU. Instead of traditional student teaching, they do a one- to two-year internship. When they’re done, they walk away with a full bachelor’s degree in education and every certification Oklahoma requires.
Phase I money got the systems built. This Phase II award is where the rubber meets the road, covering tuition, book costs, mentor-teacher stipends, and keeping the whole program running and growing. We’re talking meaningful support for at least 37 apprentices right now, with more than 50 expected to finish and get fully certified by fall 2028. First cohort wraps up this December.
Robyn Randol, who runs the program at SWOSU, said it best: this removes the barriers that have kept good people out of teaching, while giving rural districts a real way to grow their own educators instead of constantly chasing outside hires.
This whole thing runs on partnership with SWOSU’s Department of Education, the Oklahoma Public School Resource Center, and the districts themselves, all wanting the same thing. Districts give the paid classroom experience; SWOSU handles the coursework; everybody works together to make sure it actually fits what local schools need.
Department chair Marla Pankratz called it exactly what’s possible when universities, schools, and communities pull together around a shared need — and framed it as an investment not just in teachers, but in the kids and families in the towns we live in.
Worth remembering: SWOSU runs campuses right here in Weatherford, Sayre, and Yukon, serving over 5,000 students. This isn’t some university two hours away doing something interesting. This is home.

For Weatherford, the direct local political headline was less about a city-specific race and more about the statewide choices with clear local consequences: who will lead Oklahoma after Gov. Kevin Stitt’s term ends, the direction of public-school policy, and the potential effects of State Question 844 on school finances. A further late-week development: Stitt issued a proclamation seeking an April 6, 2027 vote on whether Oklahoma should hold a state constitutional convention, while creating a nine-member commission to recommend how such a convention would work.
