Even in small towns, things are happening, and events are going on. Sayre, Oklahoma, is more than just a small town. Newsworthy events are happening all the time. Here are three news events that have happened.

Sayre Fire Department grant
Sayre is one of six Oklahoma volunteer departments selected for a $10,000 State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program grant, announced August 18. The funds can pay for protective gear, EMS/rescue tools, communications devices, or other essential equipment. The nationwide program awarded $1.5 million to 150 departments this year.
Persistent extreme heat:
In case you have been living in an air-conditioned house and you haven’t been getting out as much as other folks, then it is hot! We have had 100° Sayre, and the rest of Beckham County remains under a prolonged hot, dry stretch, with regional forecasts this week generally ranging from about 100°F to 105°F or higher. County Rural Water District No. 1, based in Carter, also requested mandatory water conservation because its well field has been declining and storage tanks have been difficult to keep full. Also good to remember with this high heat and our gentle wind that Beckham County is under a burn ban, so you need to find a different way to dispose of your trash.

Early voting in Sayre: The Beckham County early-voting site is the Beckham County Activity Center, 310 E. Main St. Friday’s voting has ended, but it will be open Saturday, August 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the August 25 election. If you would like to know where to go to vote in your area, visit the OK Elections Site.
Don’t forget that Tuesday the 25 is Runoff Election Voting Day

Shortgrass Country Museum — Open Mon–Sat, 10 a.m.–12 noon, at 106 E Poplar St, downtown Sayre. Local history exhibits on the Dust Bowl and homesteading era. Short Grass Museum
Sayre City Park — Open daily for free swimming, miniature golf, and playground/pavilion use; the Route 66 landmark park on the south end of town. Sayre City Park

This little section is for the community members, and I grab this information from different community sources; most of the time it will be just reminders of important aspects to keep the community cohesion.
Watch for kids
Watch for kids on Bikes/ebokes and other modes of transportation. Those little whippersnappers often don’t have the self-awareness to know they are even in the vicinity of danger. Also, before anyone believes this gives them the excuse to turn into a Karen and start trying to make everyone safe. Stop right now. Kids, more importantly boys, have to do dangerous things. Let kids be dangerous so they will be upstanding citizens in the future. I really do believe that is part of society’s problems kids were too protected. Let them break bones and learn that an umbrella will not keep you from falling. The only time I would say step in is when it is threatening a life. Let the kids do things that may cause harm to themselves thats where the cool nicknames come from.
Helping Those in Need
There apparently is a woman who is in need of a shelter for herself and her two kids. Let’s hope someone is able to help them out. Also, if she doesn’t appear to want to keep that help and turns it away, that is no reflection on you. You tried, and the rest is actually on their shoulders. It is sad, but more often than not, the circumstance a victim is in is self-inflicted. I have helped many people walking on the side of I-40, spent good money on a motel for them to stay, only for them to take off shortly after. You tried, and that person still has a journey they have to go on, even if it is hard to watch.
